In 2013, the Rotterdam-based Theatre company Wunderbaum started building The New Forest: a four-year project and growing cooperation with numerous partners, volunteers and spectators. The New Forest depicts transition and casts an eye on tomorrow’s society in the form of theatre performances, seminars, a film project, context programmes and online content.
The first piece made was ‘De komst van Xia’ [The arrival of Xia]. It took place on the roof of the Hofbogen, the old train station in Rotterdam, and was about the question how to govern an area like that. What are the possibilities of such a place? Do people that live in the neighbourhood have anything to say about it? The play compared many models, from Plato to metamodernism. The main aim was to raise a lot of questions. How do people relate to such a place, and to each other? After this many other (see below) projects followed.
